Five Things Wrong with Apple TV

Not that we don’t watch it, but sheesh!

I subscribe to Apple TV+ and that’s the first thing wrong with Apple TV. When I say “Apple TV” what do I mean? The streaming box? The app? The streaming service that searches across other apps? Or the Apple TV Plus that creates content? Unless I spell it out, nobody knows.

But that’s the least of my complaints.

HomePod Mini

It is flatly outrageous that Apple doesn’t support using a HomePod Mini stereo pair as speakers for their Apple TV box. It’s not that the Minis don’t work, it’s that they don’t work reliably. Supposedly that will be fixed soon, but right now (August 2021) it’s a mess.

Is this actually difficult? It seems suspicious to me that when I watch a show on Netflix or HBO Max, the Mini’s are reliable, but if I watch an Apple show, I frequently can’t hear anything for a minute or two.

And why do some apps like CBS News send sound to the TV speakers instead? This should be all under the control of our Apple TV box, but obviously it isn’t.

Update: this seems to be fixed in IOS 15. So far, so good.
