That’s me. I smile because I have no clue.

How to find stuff

Reader or writer, you want this

Medium has introduced a new feature called “Lists”.

For Writers

Lists let you quickly organize your stories by whatever categories you want. Unlike publications, you can add a story to multiple lists. Unlike tags and publications, you can have many lists.

Take a quick look above at what I have started with mine. I have over 400 stories to go through, but the results will be worth it.

After I get done, I’ll return to those stories and add links to the lists they are in so that related stories are grouped together.

For Readers

If a writer here has taken the time to…

The IOS15/Monterey way is better, dude!

Screenshot of Tab Groups by Author

I have read so many negative comments about the new Safari tab features coming this Fall that you might think tabs have suddenly become unusable, but I think tabs are better than ever in IOS 15 and macOS Monterey!

Well, except this

There was one thing I did not like: distinguishing tabs by color. What this does by default is to pick up the color of site’s icons and spread it across the tab. That is distracting and a bit ugly for me, so I shut it off. …

A fun way to get a little workout

My exercise pile

I’m not an exercise fanatic. People who take their exercise seriously would laugh at any suggestion that I am.

If No Pain, No Gain is true, I’m opting for No Gain.

I just want health

I only want to maintain a reasonable level of fitness for my 73 years. I walked 20 minutes yesterday at a 14 minute and 15 second pace; that won’t get me any fitness awards but science says I’ll probably live longer.

That’s all I want. Enough to keep me healthy.

Mostly boring

I do boring exercises. It’s mostly the same thing every day: a minimum 20-minute walk whenever the weather allows…

I think robotic driving is years away

Photo by Bram Van Oost on Unsplash

Our current vehicle is a 2020 Subaru Forester. We wanted to stay with Outbacks, but the darn things have become too wide for our garage!

The Forester came equipped with the expected modern safety features: lane assist, automatic braking, blind-spot protection, and more. Some of these are legally required now, but I’m not entirely happy with all of them and there are other features I’d like to have.

I think that dream is more than a few years away. Even the optimistic forecasts of Elon Musk have been dialed back. On July third of 2021 Elon tweeted:

Yeah —…

Beta Software

Every year I say I will not do the Apple betas. Every year.

Photo by Robby McCullough on Unsplash

Why do I do the Apple betas? Why would any sane person do the Apple betas?

Those are two different questions. The second has reasonable answers: you’d install beta software if you are a developer or someone who makes a living writing about things like this.

I have a developer account but do not develop (yes, that is insane). I write about this sort of thing, but I’d be living in somebody’s garage and writing on stolen toilet paper if I were dependent on this income.

Further, the people with reason to install betas do so on spare equipment. …

Bitcoin isn’t Netflix

Ildar Sagdejev (Specious), CC BY-SA 4.0 <>, via Wikimedia Commons

The Bitcoin enthusiasts are still preaching to the ignorant. I just read another new “investor” here on Medium who is joining up because a Big Medium Name said they should.

What do they think you are “investing” in?

Bitcoin is just Dutch Tulip Bulbs. Or, perhaps more accurately, Blockbuster.

When you are speculating, you are guessing. Guesses have the best chance of success when they are backed by knowledge. The factors that will drive the value of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and every other crypto are myriad, intertwined, and difficult to predict. …

Apple Watch Fitness Awards

If you own an Apple Watch and use it to track your workouts, you may have noticed these Fitness Awards.

If you don’t own an Apple Watch or something like it, sheesh, why not?

No money, honey

These awards are just icons. There’s no money, no physical trophies, not even a lousy t-shirt. Not that Apple would make a lousy t-shirt. They make some really cool ones, like this:

Ignorance? Or something else?

Jessica Wildfire has a scathing story about the vaccine refusers and their kin. She attributes their reluctance to protect themselves to ignorance.

She also suggests that they will pay a price for their stubbornness.

If only.

Yes, some will, but most will not. Many will have natural immunity or will get a mild case — or maybe they have already had it. They also get some protection from those of us who are vaccinated and those who remain masked.

Macho is as macho does

The forty hour work week has to go

Public domain photo of 1890 sweatshop

As I worked for myself for most of my life, my motto was “Fifty is nifty, but twenty is plenty”. I actually stole that motto from a competitor back when I was a partner in a retail store. The competitor was complaining about our store’s fifty percent wholesale discounts, but I repurposed the motto for my working hours when I was a lone-wolf computer consultant and troubleshooter.

Almost nobody really *works* a forty hour week. Half of that is wasted time, goof-off time, socializing time. A THREE day work week would be quite enough and productivity would soar. Everyone, companies…
