Actually, many gig workers are willing to trade the protections of employment for the flexibility and freedom of working when they desire or when they can.
Employees get benefits, but they also give up freedom. They can be told when to work, and if that doesn’t meet their needs, the company can discard them.
Even part time workers get chained to minimum hours and, in some jobs, mandatory weekends.
The solution that would allow people freedom and provide protection is obvious: remove the responsibility for pretection from the employer and put it on society. Health care for everyone, UBI for income protection. Let those that want stability choose employment and let those who desire flexibility choose to be independent.
