IT’S NEITHER WORD SALAD OR VOMIT

AI’s Like ChatGPT Do Not Simply Regurgitate Words

It’s much more than that

A technical diagram illustrating data transfer within a computer system. A central CPU is connected to several solid-state drives (SSDs) labeled with “SSD”. Arrows from these SSDs point towards the CPU, indicating the flow of code. Another set of arrows leads from the CPU to a series of RAM modules, emphasizing the data’s journey from storage to active memory. The RAM modules are highlighted to signify their higher speed.
ChatGPT’s conceptual model of a LLM machine

I’ve said before that I don’t understand LLM’s and AI’s like ChatGPT. I’ve said that at my age, I don’t think my brain is still capable of gaining that knowledge and I know I don’t want to try.

That doesn’t mean I’m completely clueless. I have learned enough to be irritated when someone says, “Oh, these things just regurgitate words!” I might have even said something like that myself once. I know better now.

How did I get to know this? Well, who better to ask to teach me than ChatGPT 4 itself?

I’ve had several conversations with ChatGPT. One conversation delved into the question of consciousness, which I’ll likely explore in another post, but for today, I’m just going to talk about learning and responses.

You can find my original questions and answers at these links, which get rather geeky. Read if you want, or go ask it your own questions, but I am going to try to explain things more plainly.
