An engine cannot reproduce. But, we reproduce the species.

We ourselves are dependent upon bacteria that lives within us. Is that so different from an engine?

Long ago, I playfully argued with my science teacher that even a mercury thermometer has signs of life when it swells and contracts with temperature changes. Again, we provide the reproduction.
