And I think sometimes their language gives a clue, especially in writing “I do not believe in God” is not something I’d say. I’d say “I do not believe in gods” — no capitalization and not singular. The person who says it the first way sounds to me like someone who says “I quit smoking.” Sure, you did, but smoking still exists in your head and you still like it at some level.
