Apple’s AR Headset is Not the Product

Apple isn’t lost in the wild

I listened to This Week in Tech #923 this morning while walking and found myself disagreeing with just about every thing the hosts had to say about the Apple Headset that is rumored to debut at WWDC this coming June.

TWIT (as they call it) is not a podcast I listen to often, not because it isn’t good, but because it’s an hour long and because there is a lot of rambling discussion and too many very long ads. With a host and three or four guests all expressing very similar opinions, it can be a bit much.

Their opinions on Apple’s Headset were what I’ve heard just about everywhere:

  • Headsets are dead — look, Meta has given up, so have others
  • Nobody wants to wear a headset for very long.
  • It’s too expensive

Ayup. I wouldn’t argue with any of that. It’s all true.

But that’s not what Apple is trying to do and they’ve said as much. This clumsy piece of overpriced tech is for developers; it’s not the end game. If Apple has any smarts (and I would argue that they do), the next consumer product is not this at all and not even goggles like those in the picture at top here. Headsets and goggles would never be a major product…
