…ence requires no comma because it only contains one independent clause and a dependent clause. Like this: We went to the theater (independent clause) but never saw the whole movie (dependent clause—can't stand alone as a sentence). That’s a complex sentence.

But, sometimes I want a pause. Which is one of the reasons that I stopped submitting to publications that are picky about these things.
Language evolves. Editors try to restrain that.
