Chick talked a lot about the lively ball and the "dead ball". That change, hitting in the middle of career, was major, but he seemed to have adapted well.

He also spoke about physical conditioning frequently. He was called an "iron man" for his ability to pitch so long and so often. He attributed that to exercise and determination.

In the book, he said, yes, his arm did feel "dead" after a game and was sore the next day, but that he found a little more pitching worked it out.

He must have been a very determined man.
