Correction: *Most* people.
I liked my job as a self-employed software consultant and troubleshooter, but there came a point where I couldn't keep up mentally any longer. At that point, I joined the working class for a few years until the physical stress of commuting and the nonsense of the corporate stupidity plus the threat of COVID caused me to quit that.
I'm now "retired". My job is taking care of my wife, the house, the shopping, the finances, and myself. Contrary to what you said, I do not find any difficulty in keeping myself mentally engaged. Medium is part of that, so is studying Spanish and continuing to learn every day.
Working was more boring than my retirement.
