Did You Ever Spill Milk in Your Laptop?

It wasn’t a complete disaster

I bought a MacBook Pro in 2006, the very first Intel model. It was my first Mac and I fell in love with it. It had everything I needed for the types of computer work I was doing back then. It ran MacOS, it could dual boot Windows, it had a real Unix command line, and I could ssh to my clients’ Unix systems. It had developer tools. It had serial ports which gave me access to the many RS-232 devices still common then.

It was my constant companion, my go-to tool for so many things. It truly was the perfect machine for me.

As I do now, I did a lot of writing then. I had a very popular website that concentrated on Unix systems and I published there often. The MacBook Pro was my tool for that writing as well.

A sudden idea

One night I jumped out of bed to edit something on that website. I might have suddenly remembered something I’d left out of a post or maybe I wanted to jot down an idea. The MacBook was on my desk in my office, so that’s where I headed.

On the way, I stopped at the refrigerator and poured a glass of milk. Carrying that, I continued to my office, opened the MacBook with my left hand, and dumped the milk all over the keyboard.
