Even into the 1960's and 70's, I communicated regularly with my aunt and my grandmother by letters far more than by phone. Long distance calls were still expensive then!

My wife and I both enjoyed deciphering my grandmother's wretched handwriting - Linda was far better at it than I was.

I had to be in South Carolina for several weeks after we were first married - long distance was still expensive, so we wrote letters daily and did a weekly phone call.

We still have the letters :)
