Every one of these words was either “vulgar” (meaning it was in the commoners (the vulgate) vocabulary or profane (offensive to someone’s religious practices).

Prohibiting vulgar words is pure class distinction. Prohibition of the profane can be a matter of polite behavior is some contexts, but otherwise is silly.
