Fifty Is Nifty, But Twenty Is Plenty — Working Hours, That Is

The forty hour work week has to go

As I worked for myself for most of my life, my motto was “Fifty is nifty, but twenty is plenty”. I actually stole that motto from a competitor back when I was a partner in a retail store. The competitor was complaining about our store’s fifty percent wholesale discounts, but I repurposed the motto for my working hours when I was a lone-wolf computer consultant and troubleshooter.

Almost nobody really *works* a forty hour week. Half of that is wasted time, goof-off time, socializing time. A THREE day work week would be quite enough and productivity would soar. Everyone, companies and employees, would be better off. Unemployment would dip, the economy would soar.

Nobody should *need* to work more than 20 hours a week. There’s too much else we need to do. Our stress filled, workaholic society is killing us.

Some ever-suffering billionaires wouldn’t have quite so much of the pie. Don’t worry: I’m sure Congress will find some way to ease their pain.

If you enjoyed this, I’m happy. If you’d like to buy me a coffee, you can do that here.
