Forty plus years ago I briefly had a job where part of my responsibility was to prepare a monthly magazine ad.

All went well for almost a year but then I was summoned to the owner’s office. He tossed the current issue of the magazine at me and commanded “Look at the ad. Page ten.”

I flipped to it while he glowered at me. When I found the ad, I was shocked. The prices were too low — we’d be losing a lot of money!

But then I realized something. “Hey, this ad copy had to be in by August 15th, right?”

The boss grunted and I continued. “I was on vacation from the tenth to the twenty-fifth. Who made up this ad?”

I looked at him and he looked down at his desk.

“Never mind,” he said, “You better get this month’s ad ready!”

I realized that HE had prepared the ad! That did not stop him from adding. “And don’t screw it up!” as I left his office!
