Get Some Peace and Quiet While Still Allowing Important People To Reach You

Your iPhone has settings for this

Your iPhone can be far less annoying if you know about settings that help control who/what can disturb you and when. New features in recent OS upgrades have given us much more control.

Do Not Disturb and Focus

This feature has been supercharged as of IOS 15 and macOS Monterey. Rather than just a binary on or off switch, you can now create levels of how much interruption you will tolerate. For example, the screenshot above shows a level I created for my weekly phone chat with my sisters. Notice that it allows me to specify who can call or message me during that chat and also what apps are allowed to send me notifications. This particular Focus is set to turn on automatically but you can also trigger these manually from Control Center, from Siri, and from Shortcuts. They can also be triggered by location or even when opening a specific app. Imagine automatically triggering a Do Not Disturb scene when opening your favorite writing app!
