Here’s the thing that most people don’t know.
In the early days of Google and Amazon it was easy to make money from running their ads. I had a relatively small website then and made an easy $10,000 a year. Bigger sites made much more.
But the revenues declined. The ads don’t pay as much, everybody knows about Amazon so affiliate referrals dropped. That way of earning money is pretty much dead. Before I sold it off, that website was lucky to give me a dollar a day.
Medium is not running ads. They depend on subscribers. If they charged much more, few people would sign up. So there’s not a gigantic pile of money.
Some people make a lot because they attract more readers. Medium is fairly transparent about how they distribute the money. Some details may be vague, but the overall picture is plain.
I’ve been doing this a long time. I expect to make a few hundred a month here eventually, but that will take time. It’s fine. It’s a process, you work at it. For most, it won’t come easily. Some will have more talent or more luck.
That’s true no matter what you do in life.
