I Bought the New Apple TV 4K Even Though It Doesn’t Matter

Yes, that’s a geeky pun

Our internet has been flaky for a month and has finally reached the point of being too annoying to ignore. Almost every morning, I would have to power off the old Verizon router in order to regain wireless access. Some days I’d need to do that two or even three times for it to be willing to talk to me and mine.

My first instinct was to call Verizon. It’s their router and their ONT (Optical Network Terminal if you care). As it’s the wireless that failed while the other lights madly kept going blinkity-blink, odds were that it was a new router I needed. So I called.

Silly me. I cut the cord a while back and while Verizon kindly left me keep my old Actiontec router (or maybe I bought it years back, I don’t remember), they informed me that they would want $18 a month or $399 flat to provide me with a new router. And yes, the ActionTec is “retired” and not a great idea to keep attached, they added.

Money, money

I’m not afraid to spend $399 on a router. Heck, back when I was selling and supporting security routers, I had equipment much more expensive than that sitting behind the FIOS router because I needed features to support all the things I was selling.
