I Can’t Read the Text Messages

The perils of downsizing

The texts are too small to read.

No, not on my phone, I can read those texts. I’m talking about when we are watching a TV show and they put someone’s phone on the screen to show us the critical plot defining text that just came in.

It’s too small; I can’t make it out. My wife can’t see it either, so now I have to stop the show, skip back a few seconds, then get up and go read the text or texts out loud.

That’s not fun for either of us because my wife can’t hear men’s voices well, which might require me to repeat myself a few times. Sometimes we decide not to bother and assume we’ll figure the meaning out as the show continues.

Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes we get it very wrong. Some of the shows we watch can be confusing to start with; guessing at texts doesn’t help. Squinting and getting it wrong can really throw us off course.

So why can’t we read the texts?

We have a 50” HD TV and are sitting 10 feet away. Since my cataract surgery, I have 20/20 vision in one eye and at 20/40 in the other, so I should be able to read the text, I felt.
