I self-published a Kindle-only tech book in 2009. Not only that, but I promoted and sold it on my own website first at $29.95 a copy and sold quite a few. When that dwindled, I put it on Amazon and sold a good number at ten or fifteen dollars. Then that declined, so I dropped it to Amazon’s bare minimum and also put it into that KDP program where they give it away but still pay you.

That book is WAY out of date, but the KDP keeps feeding me a few cents now and then. I’ve sold 362 copies at Amazon as of today. And 3 last year :)

I had mentioned all this to someone a year or so again and they sneered while informing me that I’m not a real author.

Okay, but I made money and (technically) am still making money from it. Shrug.
