I was able to rejoin today. I wrote to support explains that I had canceled my membership and PayPal subscription and wanted to sign up again with Apple Pay, not PayPal. I got this reply:

”Hello, You should be able to re-join as a Friend Tier member now. I had to cancel the previous membership, so you'll have a new "Member since" date that I will update to the correct date after you join the Friend Tier. Please reply to this email once you've done that so I can update the date to the 2020 date for you. Sorry for the inconvenience. ”

So now I am all set!
