If we do find evidence of life on Mars, the majority of people won't care or will reject it. Others will simply absorb it into more things they can't comprehend.

It won't weaken religion, affect world peace, diminish murders, pollution, child abuse, racism or anything else.

Only a very few of us will be excited. For the rest, it will be analagous to Starbucks announcing a new coffee concoction. Meh.
