In my Spanish course, I had to translate “John, ten el mapa” this morning. I hadn’t thought of tener being used as a command before, and I don’t entirely trust Duolingo, so I asked ChatGPT:

Can the “ten” as used in “John, ten el mapa” be translated as “John, take the map”?

And got a good answer more quickly than I could have found it in my Routledge Reference Grammar book.
