In our current environment I’m sure many people feel as he does, and that others would say just what you said.

I’ve heard people say things like “I don’t have two (expletive)s to give” and that’s often sarcastic and cruel, but sometimes it’s sad and weary. We can run out of empathy, at least temporarily, because we are not superhuman.
