It feels to me that I navigate by knowing the direction I must head initially. Then when I see a familiar location, I may or may not get a new bearing to use. Of course today highways are part of it, but I think that's how it works. Certsinly that's how most of us give directions: "You'll see an old red barn. If you come to a four way stop, you have gone too far."
