It's the pattern matching that learns from a set of data and goals that often can't be predicted. There's nothing actually intelligent about it; it's just massive relationship crunching.

However, I suspect some of that comes from poor training. The machine may infer relationships we don't see, but it could also pick out relationships that should not have been part of its training.
