Maskless Emergency Responders?

That shocked and upset me

My wife tripped over a chair leg and fell hard last night. This is, unfortunately, the ninth time she has fallen in the past four years. She’s a tough 74-year-old, but that many falls would be hard at any age. She has broken bones in previous falls; this time she hurt her ribs and hip badly.

Because it was late, and because we would like to avoid hospitals if possible, we decided to wait until morning to see if she felt better.

I can’t breathe!

She did not. She woke up around six; her rib and hip pain were worse. She was loudly and repeatedly yelling, “I can’t breathe!”

I had to calm her down, telling her that nobody could yell like that without breathing. But I understood that the pain was scaring her, so I called for an ambulance. I’m still fit, but I did not feel that I could get her safely in our car to take her myself. I had already strained muscles picking her up from the floor the night before.

Makeup?

While we waited, my wife asked me to bring her makeup bag. She wanted to put on blush and fix her hair! I said nothing, just took a deep breath, and fetched her bag. Internally, I was rolling my eyes. I’m quite sure the emergency…
