My Aneroid Comptometer

No, the blue one!

My wife recently found an old tape recording from when we were a very young family. On one side is twenty minutes or so of us playing Candyland. The very serious and concerned comments from our youngest girl about Dad getting sent back made us chuckle. Side two was the youngest again playing “doctor” with her Mom, followed by me interviewing the oldest about her recent trip to Disneyworld. They were great fun to listen to and brought back some wonderful memories.

This reminded me of another game that I played frequently with our youngest. It’s called “Aneroid Comptometer”. I’ve told many people about this over the years and some have told me that they played a similar game with their own children, though they called it something different or had no name for it at all.

It’s a game I made up one afternoon when our daughter was bored but I had studying to do. Thinking to put her off for a few minutes, I asked her to go get my aneroid comptometer.

She was about the age you see in the picture here and immediately ran off. She quickly came back with some toy or knick-knack which I examined critically and rejected, explaining “No, that’s not my aneroid comptometer — this is yellow!”

Off she went again, which gave me a chance to read a few pages of my book. She came back with…
