My father-in-law was in a terrible home where residents were neglected. Unfortunately, his second wife had power of attorney and did not care. He was aphasic, only able to shake his head yes or no, unable to complain, so my wife did it for him.
And they banned her for that. Again, the step-mother did not care.
So I went in to see him every week. I’d take him outside in his wheelchair while talking and singing to him while we walked.
A few weeks of that and they told me I couldn’t take him out. I asked him if he wanted to go out and could see the fear on his face. He didn’t dare to shake his head yes.
The head nurse smirked. I was angry and said something like,”You are a very cruel person.”
They banned me.
Fortunately there were two other sisters and a brother and now they knew to say nothing.
Horrible, horrible, experience.
On the other side, I laughed at “Well, it’s time for me to go home now.”. When my mother was in the home, we’d bring her books and magazines. If she was very interested in something in the pile, ten minutes later she would say, “You must be tired. You should go home now.” And she meant it :)
