My father was name Beardsley Lawrence Jr. Naturally, they called him Larry, and that caused confusion for others all of his life. He claimed that during WW II, the army searched in vain for Larry Beardsley, the draft dodger, while he, Beardsley Lawrence, was exempt because he was an engineer at a chemical plant that made things needed for the war.
