My wife’s father was in an awful nursing home and became horribly depressed. His third wife had POA and proxy, she wanted home there, so there was nothing anyone could do. He was miserable until he died.

One of his younger brothers ended up in one almost as bad a decade later. His daughter moved him to a slightly better one and ultimately moved him somewhere that he really liked. It was a great place and he was very happy there — and yes, it was a Medicare facility!

There are good places. They may be hard to find, but they do exist.
