“Nobody Wants To Pay Taxes”, She Said
Yet some of us do. Not Donald Trump, of course.
That title is pulled from an article that describes reactions by Trump voters to the revelations about Trump paying very little in taxes.
My immediate reaction was that some of us do want to pay our taxes, and we want others to do the same.
I am reminded of an acquaintance who lived in the same upscale suburban town we lived in before moving to our present home in a retirement community. We lived in an older, more modest part of the town, close to the lake, the town center, and commuter rail. Our acquaintance, let’s call him Dave, lived in a more expensive area, a bit more toward the outskirts, with newer, larger homes, and more acreage.
We only knew Dave and his wife because we both belonged to a campground in the western part of the state where we spent summer weekends. As both Dave and I were self-employed, we were often there more than weekends as well. That’s where we met and learned that we lived in the same town at the other end of the state.
Our taxes were high by the standards of surrounding towns. Dave’s, of course, were higher. Tax bills arrived in the spring, shortly before our camp opened. I’d open the envelope, glance at it, shrug, and go…
