Oh, Do They Require Masks Here?
What a silly question
My wife and I noticed a neighbor walking into the supermarket a few feet ahead of us. After we passed through the door, we caught up with him. I called out his name and said hello.
We hadn’t seen him for a bit, so he asked the usual questions about what we have been up to. I noticed that my wife had forgotten to put on her mask; I had been wearing mine since we left the car. I reminded her to put her mask on.
Our neighbor looked confused. He started to pull a mask from his pocket, saying “Oh, are they requiring masks again here?”
Now it was my turn to be confused. Unmasked customers were all around us. I shook my head.
“It’s not about required or not required. We wear our masks because you can still get very sick from the variants, even if vaccinated.”
I didn’t add that because there are so many refusing vaccination and masks, the chances of encountering a COVID-19 variant are much higher than they should be. I also didn’t point out that ANY encounter could mean a new, unknown, perhaps deadly variant. I didn’t explain that I know that KN95 masks aren’t great protection, but ANY reduction in exposure means less chance of infection. Nor did I mention that I know that healthy, vaccinated…
