People should have this choice.
However, I'd rather have targeted ads. The ads may miss the target entirely, but I think it's better than not aiming at all. If I've been looking at iRobot, chances are good that I'm thinking of replacing my Roomba.
What the advertisers could do is what Google does in it's gmail app: give you a chance to tell them that you will never have any interest in Male Enhancement Drugs or whatever is being pitched today.
If they did that, we might find the ads less annoying.
