Question for you: didn’t this begin with Native Americans selling land to colonists? What I’ve read says that the natives didn’t really understand the concept of land ownership, so were duped.

Whether that’s accurate or not, imagine what the difference might have been had they leased the land rather than sold it. So many things might have been so different had this been the normal transaction.
