States Are Rejecting the Apple-Google COVID -19 Contact Tracing API

This rejection is understandable but foolish.

A few weeks ago, Apple and Google proudly released a joint effort API (Application Programming Interface) for cell phones that would make automated contact tracing easier and ensure more privacy. The purpose was and is to help trace who comes in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

This is an API, not an app. The API is baked into the operating systems and requires an app designed by public health departments. If you chose to install that app, you would know if you were close to a potentially infected person for a long enough time to be in danger yourself.

That sounds very helpful and important too. The individual states responsible for developing the apps have almost unanimously turned thumbs down on the concept. Some have apparently decided to create their own apps, but most seem to have decided that they will rely on traditional manual methods of door to door screening interviews.
