I’m not sure they are atheists at all
If you clicked into this hoping to read a scathing denunciation of the evils of atheism, back away slowly now. I am an atheist, so that is not what this is about.

No, this is about a certain kind of atheist. These are the ones who once were believers but became atheists because they couldn’t reconcile their beliefs with the “problem of evil”. They are the Evil Atheists — people who became atheists because of evil.
“I can’t believe in a God who would let children starve!”
“There are pedophile priests!”
“Why does God allow murder?”
“Why does God allow suffering?”
“Why does God allow pain?”
“How can God allow rapists, child pornography, Donald Trump?”
Okay, I’m not sure anyone ever said Donald drove them to atheism. I’d expect that people prayed for Divine Intervention rather than losing their faith. As to the rest, my answer is that there are no gods, but that doesn’t need to be your answer.
