There is another analogy that could come to pass. Animals communicate with each other but we don’t understand much of it. AI may be able to help with that and even allow us to communicate with them.

Suppose we then find out that cows actually are horrified by the idea of us killing them for food. Your “we need to be vegan” may still have no compelling argument, but “we shouldn’t eat steak” sure would.

That’s much closer to the abortion debate, We ARE killing potential humans, but most of us don’t think they are human enough. I’m pretty sure many steak lovers would argue that cows are not sentient enough even if we could talk to them.
