What Is That Strange Smell in the House?
Some smells are hard to identify. I can help.
Human sense of smell isn’t the best in the animal world, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t be assaulted by unpleasant odors. Sometimes the source is obvious and easily fixed, but that’s not always true. I have experienced quite a few odd smells and will share some of them with you.

Would you believe that sloppily installed duct work can leave enough space for a mouse to wriggle its way in? We had a smell coming from a heating register that eventually was traced to a dead mouse!
Decomposition is pretty easy to identify. Most of us will recognize that rather instantly and pinpointing the source usually isn’t particularly hard. Getting rid of it might involve inconvenience and expense, but it’s not usually mysterious.
Other house smells can be harder to determine. If the smell is persistent, you can probably narrow down the source fairly easily, but if it comes and goes mysteriously, eliminating it becomes much harder. There are some obvious and not so obvious possibilities; if you have a strange smell, perhaps you’ll find some help here.
