When my wife and I were first married, a social worker told us we could qualify for assistance.

…? You’d assume a poor person would realize how close they are to needing that assistance themselves. But in my experience, people who struggle to pay their own way take great pride in managing to do so, and feel real anger at the people who don’t. They need to believe in the power of individuality. It’s all they’ve got.
