HOLIDAYS

Why Don’t We Have a Holiday Law?

Too many people seldom get to enjoy important holidays with their families

We all want to be able to shop on holidays, don’t we? Some of that shopping is important: pharmacies certainly should be open. But do Apple stores need to be open? Walmart? Supermarkets? Restaurants?

I guess you can make a case for any of them. I broke my phone and need it fixed. My refrigerator died and I have no food. It’s convenient to have stores open, isn’t it?

Do you have any feelings for the employees who have to work at those stores?

Yes, many will get to choose some other day off to compensate and many will get extra pay for working the holiday. There are some holidays, like Thanksgiving, where most stores are closed in the U.S. so the employees may get that off with pay, just like everyone else. Except Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday, and a lot of non-retail employees get that Thursday and Friday off with pay.

Not so retail workers. Friday is back to work for them.

Here’s a thought

Why don’t we have a holiday law that says no employee can work more than two hours on a holiday unless their pay increases 50 percent each additional hour they work?
