Will We Ever Have Open Borders?

Will we ever have a united world government?

Most people see that as impossible. It will never happen, they say.

Never?

Consider the native peoples of North America. Different languages, sometimes at war with each other; could they ever have imagined the United States of America? Probably not. Nor could many European countries imagine the European Union. As fragile as it is after Brexit, it was and is a step toward common government.

We are drawing closer

In some ways, we are all much closer than we ever have been. One thing that no one had until very recently is the Internet. That brings us together, because many people now have friends and acquaintances in other countries. Many of us are bilingual, and computer translation also makes it easier than ever to communicate with others. Communication is the first step toward cooperation, and cooperation is a prerequisite toward community.

Even air travel is relatively recent in human history. Our populations have never been able to mix as freely and as quickly as we can today.

We have never had so much trade between countries. We have never had so many multi-national businesses with deep roots in so many places. Businesses don’t want dissent and…
