With Obnoxious Comments, There’s Blocking, and Then There’s Really Blocking

If you choose to do anything, of course

A heavily redacted comment Notification from Medium

I usually ignore obnoxious comments. I don’t mean the “Contact me at Telegram” type; those I report and block the author. I mean the “You are a fool, you can’t write, keep your day job” type, and worse.

Shrug. These are often penned by someone who has written some incoherent “stories”, has six followers, and is probably unaware that their intended insults have dropped a few more pennies in my pocket. I often clap once, and then respond with some smiley emoji: 🥸

Should I click on the “responded to” or the text they are remarking upon, I will see their comment. I have had a few really ugly ones recently — well deserved because of my libtard ranting, of course. So I clicked on the three-dot menu, and saw something like this:

A dropdown menu with various options for interacting with content on Medium. The menu options are as follows: — **Show more**: Recommend more stories like this to me. — **Show less**: Recommend fewer stories like this to me. — **Undo claps**: Undo a previously given reaction (claps). — **Unfollow author**: Stop following the author of the content. — **Mute author**: Stop seeing content from this author. — **Report story…**: report the content of the story for review or violation.

Gee, none of those were what I wanted to do. I could click on the author’s icon, go to their page, and block them there, but I’m lazy.

If I go to my story itself, dive into comments, and then click the three-dot menu on…
