The reason that housing is becoming almost totally unaffordable is that large corporations and hedge funds buy up houses. They create a scarcity of houses available for sale, which drives up prices for the few houses they put up for sale. They rent out the remaining houses at ever-increasing rates, often without doing any repairs on them.
