Many a decade ago, I traveled New England frequently. I wasn’t sightseeing, I was venturing out to do ‘puter work for clients, often for clients I had never visited before in cities and towns I’d never heard of. This was long before the age of cell phones, so people who needed to go places they’d never been before had to rely on these things called maps. Only “maps” were not apps, because we didn’t have apps, we had either a table sized piece of paper that was folded in such a way that ordinary humans could never refold it properly, or we had a large spiral bound book that was filled with maps of cities.

I had both kinds. Folded up maps of states and stacks of city map books. The latter were grid maps: A-Z on one axis, 1 to whatever on another. If you needed to go to LaGrange street, you’d look that up in the index, and it would give you the page number and the grid coordinates. That was high-tech compared to stopping at gas stations and watching an attendant scratch their head while telling you to turn left at Old Peck’s barn, you can’t miss it, well, if you do, you’ll come to the lake, and you’ll need to turn around.
