You Can’t Trust The Dead People

But many people do

I wrote this because I was wondering if humans could have developed a religion they wouldn’t squabble about, that would satisfy their fear of death, but would not annoy the non-believers very much.

Maybe something like this.

Hey, Dad? Johnny at school said that Gramps has gone to Heaven.”

Frank closed the cover of his laptop and looked over at his young son.

“Well, that’s what most people believe, yes.”

“He said I can talk to Gramps. That he’ll give me advice, help me and stuff.”

Frank paused. “Well,” he said slowly, “a lot of people think that’s true, and maybe it is. But..”

Jimmy looked at his father and frowned. “But what?”.

Frank sighed. “But if you can talk to people who have died, you can’t really trust them. It’s complicated.”

Jimmy looked confused and came over to sit beside Frank. “What do you mean?”

“Some people can hear what dead folks say, and yes, they get advice. But most people don’t really hear anything, they just get feelings, like hints, or…
